The iconic small car could make more sense today as an affordable electric city car, although there is still no confirmation of a production Nano EV
The Tata Nano may have disappeared from showrooms, but the little car still holds a special place in the hearts of many Indians. With electric cars becoming more popular, bringing back the Nano as an EV is an interesting idea. There is no confirmed Nano EV yet, but the original car’s basic idea could fit today’s urban needs quite well.
The original Nano was built around a simple idea: to offer Indian families an affordable alternative to a two-wheeler. However, being marketed as the world’s cheapest car worked against it. The Nano became known more for its low price than for what it had to offer. The market has changed since then, though, and an electric Nano could be positioned very differently.
A modern Nano EV could work well as a small city car, especially for buyers looking to move from a scooter or motorcycle to a four-wheeler. Tata already sells the Tiago EV, but there could still be room for a smaller and more affordable model below it.
Interestingly, Tata has experimented with an electric Nano before. The company worked with Jayem Automotives on an electric version called the Jayem Neo, mainly for fleet use. It came with a 17 kWh battery pack and had a claimed range of around 130 km. A production Nano EV today, however, would need more range, better safety and a much more modern cabin.
The biggest challenge would be positioning the new Tata Nano. Tata would not want the Nano EV to take sales away from the Tiago EV, so there would need to be a clear difference in price and size between the two. Even so, the idea of an electric Nano makes more sense today than the original Nano ever did.

We have already seen that there is demand for small cars, with the MG Comet being a good example. Tata would no longer need to sell the Nano EV as the cheapest car in the country. Instead, if it can build a desirable, safe and affordable electric city car around the Nano name, the little car could finally get the second chance it never got the first time around.
